April polls: Ngige not a candidate, INEC insists

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Sunday declared that former Governor of Anambra and gubernatorial standard bearer of the Action Congress (AC) in the state, Dr. Chris Ngige, is not a candidate in the coming governorship elections.

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Sunday declared that former Governor of Anambra and gubernatorial standard bearer of the Action Congress (AC) in the state, Dr. Chris Ngige, is not a candidate in the coming governorship elections.

Amid claims by the politician during the rally by the AC in Awka that he is contesting the election for governor in the state, INEC clarified that Ngige by its own reckoning is not a candidate and would not be listed as a contestant in the April polls.

Public Affairs Director of the Commission, Pastor Segun Adeogun confirmed to Daily Sun in Abuja that no party submitted Dr. Ngigeís name as a candidate for any election and neither did he come for verification as done by other candidates.
"We donít recognize him, no party forwarded his name as a governorship candidate, he didnít even come for verification, which could have afforded him opportunity to fill INEC form for recognition as a candidate," the INEC spokesman said.

Pastor Adeogun also claimed that APGA has no candidate for the coming governorship election, saying that Mrs. Virgy Etiabaís name was earlier forwarded by the party and that she came for verification only for her to voluntarily withdraw.

Incumbent Governor Peter Obi had headed for court seeking declaration that he has to stay four years in office from the date of his inauguration as the governor of the state, insisting that the constitution is in support of his claims and he therefore does not need to present himself as a candidate for the coming election.
