PDP gubernatorial aspirant escapes death


A gubernatorial aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in Delta State, Chief Power Aginighan, on Tuesday night escaped being killed by bandits, who ambushed his convoy along Effurun - Agbor highway.

Although Aginighan was not hurt, his vehicle was riddled with bullets.

It would be recalled that the Divisional Crime Officer in charge of Ekpan Police station, in Uvwie Local Government Area of the state, Mr. Adesina Otulana, was killed by bandits at Umutu, along the same highway, on Monday morning.

The bandits have seized the highway, especially at Umutu axis in the past one month, a development which resulted in a nightmare for commuters.

Our correspondent learnt that Aginighan who was on his way to Oghara for a meeting with Governor James Ibori ran into blockades mounted by the bandits shortly after Agbor.

It was gathered Aginighan‘s convoy reportedly waited along with other commuters at a location on the highway following report that the bandits were operating at a spot ahead.

But findings revealed that Aginighan later braved the situation in order to meet up with Ibori’s appointment, only to run into blockades by the bandits few kilometres away.

Aginighan, who spoke with our correspondent on Wednesday thanked God for saving him.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, Miss Olabisi Okuwobi, said the Commissioner of Police, Mr Udom Ekpoudom, had inaugurated a team to patrol the route.

Okuwobi said recent development indicated the team was not discharging its responsibility, adding that the CP has directed punitive measures against members of the team.
