Yenagoa — The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties in Bayelsa State (CNPP) has described as a worrisome development the spate of political motivated killings in the country capable of scaring away genuine and patriotic Nigerians from partisan politics.
While condemning last week’s gruesome murder of Engr. Funso Williams, a frontline politician and Lagos State gubernatorial aspirant under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), by suspected assassins, the coalition of opposition parties in a statement signed by its chairman, Mr. Ebikibina Miriki called on the relevant authorities to put in place all necessary machinery to unmask his killers and bring them to book so as to serve as deterrent to others.
Describing the tragic killing of Engr. Williams as barbaric, uncivilized, saddening and unfortunate, the CNPP further lamented that the killing of the gubernatorial aspirant of the Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) in Plateau State and the recent attack on the National Chairman of Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD), Chief Alexis Anielo in Enugu saying "it is clear indication that the perpetrators of these acts are trying to introduce a dangerous dimension into politics.’’
The group which threw its weight behind the call for a thorough and independent investigation of heinous crime warned that the killers if left on the prowl would not only spell doom for the polity but also pose a threat to the relative peace in the country.
It therefore called the Inspector General of Police and the federal government to make good their promise to expose the killers and not allow the murder of Engr. Funso Williams to be swept under the carpet like that of late Chief Bola Ige, Marshal Harry, A.K. Dikibo among others.
