Today's Headlines

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan (UI), Lagos State University (LASU) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG), yesterday joined their colleagues nation wide to observe the five-day strike which ends on July 4.

At the University of Ibadan, students who went for lectures left disappointed as their lecturers did not show up. A lecturer who spoke on condition of anonymity expressed the hope that the union would not be forced to go beyond the one-week industrial action. Chairman of the local chapter of ASUU, Dr. Demola Aremu was not available for comment.

Chairman of the LASU Branch, Alloy Ihua confirmed the branches full participation in the strike and added that, if the Federal Government fails to reconstitute a negotiating committee to discuss the 2001 agreement reached with ASUU, after the one week strike, which is not a warning strike, but a full strike, the union will have no option but to go on for another one month. So we are calling on all people of goodwill, all stakeholders to prevail on the Federal Government to resume negotiation with ASUU and recall the lecturers sacked at the University of Ilorin. Chairman of the UNILAG Chapter, Dr. Ayo Olowe could not be reached at the time of filing this report
