LOC Completes Draws For Amaechi Cup …Test Match Ends In Draw

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the inaugural Street football competition for the old Township and Borokiri axis of Port Harcourt City, Rivers State tagged Amaechi Cup, conducted draws for the fixtures of the tournament.

The draw, which was held at the No 1 Field, proposed venue for the matches saw the 32 registered teams spread across eight groups of four teams each.

In Group A, Rex Lawson Street, Harbour Road, Niger Street and Ndoki are to battle for the knockout stage tickets.

Cemetery Street, Etche, Opobo and Reclamation are in Group B, while Victoria Street, Adaka Boro, Hospital Road and Ibeto are in C.

Group D has Andoni Street, Creek Road, Port Johnson Street and Moscow Road, while Bile Street, Takoradi, Bonny Street and Sokoto Street are in Group E.

Other Groups include, I. B. Johns Street, Accrass, Eberi and Crowther in F, Bende Street, Harold Wilson, Okhaki and Banham Streets in G, while Nembe Street, Stadium Road, Isaka Street and Enugu Street, are in H.

The competition proper is scheduled to begin on July 21st with Opobo and Etche Streets playing the opening match.

A total prize money of N18 million will be at stake. Meanwhile, in the test match to test-run facilities at the No 1 Field yesterday between the selected teams of All Stars players in the Old Township and Borokiri ended one goal apiece.

The Town team opened scoring in the first half while their Borokiri counterparts equalized in the second.

Indeed, it was a display of exquisite football as the players, most of them elderly, showed fine artistry on the ball.

Also, there was impressive turnout of spectators, as every available space was taken up and fans had to be stopped from overcrowding the venue.

It showed that the people had been yearning for the return of sporting life to the area, and they embrace the Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s initiative with open arms.
