Former governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Agagu, yesterday challenged the state government to account for how it expended the over N240 billion it received from the federation account in the last two years.

Mr Agagu who was speaking during the campaign tour of Ondo South senatorial district on Wednesday, alleged that the state governor, Olusegun Mimiko has been spending the state’s funds on “elephant projects”.

The former governor wondered why Mr Mimiko’s government has failed to impact positively on the people of the state despite receiving over N240 billion from the federation account in the last two years.

Mr Agagu also claimed that Mr Mimiko is planning to source for N30 billion loan.

Get your facts right

However, the state Commissioner for Information, Ranti Akerele, said the state had only received N125 billion from the federation account in the last two years.

Mr Akerele urged members of the PDP to always get their fact right before going to the press, saying “The PDP in Ondo State lost out because most of those who were at the helms of affairs had no brains. It is either they do not know the truth or they deliberately twisted the truth. “The truth of the matter is that we had only collected about N125 billion as at last month, since we came to office. When they were here, they used to get about N6 billion in a month; that has reduced drastically.

“Sometimes in a month, we get less than N4 billion and as I speak with you, we have not borrowed one kobo to execute all the projects we have executed.

“We have 100 of them executed and commissioned, we have done 85 health centres. We are doing many mega schools. We have done mother and child hospital and we are doing more; we are doing many community projects,” he added.

Mr Akerele stressed that “Even if we choose to use the instrumentality of the law, we will go to the House of Assembly, if they permit us to do so. It is done all over the world.

“You can borrow money to execute capital projects. When they were here, they did nothing, yet they put Ondo people into debt. They should come and list the number of things they did for their six years of inaction in the state.

“I challenge Agagu and Ondo PDP to a public debate, let them come and list what they did in six years and what Mimiko has done in two years.
