THE 27-member Imo State House of Assembly has passed a bill renaming the Imo State University as Evan Enwerem University.

After a series of debates and committee stages chaired by the deputy speaker of the house, Chief Jonas Okeke, the bill was passed after it went to the committee of the whole house presided over by the Speaker, Chief Goodluck Opiah.

The bill which is to be assented to by the Governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim provides that Enwerem, a past governor of the state, but now late, should have the institution bears his name.

The Guardian learnt that Imo State University was relocated to Owerri during the regime of Enwerem in 1991.

In a related development, the bill seeking to repeal the Imo State Environmental Protection Agency (ISEPA) is now being deliberated upon by the members of the assembly.

According to the house majority leader, Dr. John Egbuchulam, the bill seeks to repeal the agency which came on board by Law 1992, adding that the agency was no longer useful because there were similar ministries, Imo State Ministry of Petroleum and Environment and the Environmental Transformation Commission, (ENTRACO) which have taken over assets and liabilities of ISEPA.
